Of course I second Asend. What’s not to like? It is interesting that Roni Size isn’t judged generously nowadays. I have seen a few negative comments about him, in particular about how he stole the Mercury Prize, as if he were another M People. But he was great and New Forms still sounds great and the title track still sounds cutting edge.

Agreed on most counts (although Thurston Moore might have a thing or two to say about SST). My own addition would be Cocteau Twins — everything from Garlands to Blue Bell Knoll was eighties.

When I think of how clueless I was at the time, it makes me sad.

Thanks: Without a trajectory through the morass, disorientation and disengagement can’t help but follow. Or as Sven Birkets argues around literature, sustained attention — a temporal endeavour — enriches our experience of the work. Cheap storage media, the devices for retrieving what they record, can facilitate active engagement, but to descend into cliche — the revolution will not be podcast until after the fact. You really had — and have — to be there. Now.

I love your list, but I have to add a #9:
Skinny Puppy's 1988 album VivisectVI. I actually didn't get around to buying it until late '89, and it summed up the 80's for me in a way that no other album or band did.

Oh, and Terminator 2 was 1991…
